International demand, especially from China, played an important role in these results

Brazil reached a new milestone in its exports in 2023, with a turnover of US$ 166 billion, according to data from Cepea (Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics), Esalq/USP, based on information from the Ministry of Development, Industry , Commerce and Services (MDIC), Foreign Trade Secretariat – Siscomex system. This mark represents an increase of 4.3% compared to the previous year, consolidating the fourth consecutive year of records (2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023).

Despite the average drop of almost 10% in the prices of exported products, the growth in exported volume was enough to boost revenue. Grains stand out, with corn leading the growth in export volume at 29% from 2022 to 2023. The soybean complex remained the main revenue generator, totaling around US$ 67 billion in shipments, which represents 40% of the total. In addition, products from the sugar and alcohol sector, corn and chicken and pork meat also recorded increases in exports.

Cepea researchers emphasize that international demand, especially from China, played an important role in these results, boosting record production in Brazil. However, increased production in other countries and the stability of the dollar around R$ 5/US$ contributed to the fall in prices throughout the year.

The main destinations for Brazilian exports continued to be China, the United States and the European Union, with other important markets such as those in the Arab League and Asia also contributing significantly.

For 2024, Cepea researchers predict continued demand for food, fiber and energy, albeit with expectations of lower economic growth in some major economies, such as China. As for supply, a stable harvest is expected in the Southern Hemisphere, while Argentina is expected to recover previous losses, impacting external markets.
