Electronic cigarettes, a product for import and sale prohibited in Brazil, are among the detained goods.
The Smuggling and Smuggling Surveillance and Suppression Service (SEREP) of the Port of Manaus Customs seized smuggled goods during the month of February, in the capital of Amazonas.
Operations are mainly concentrated at two points: on air carriers, where cargo usually arrives in the city of Manaus, and at Authorized Ports, where goods imported or manufactured in the Manaus Free Trade Zone tend to be admitted.
Several foreign goods were identified on air carriers in commercial circulation without proof of regular import. Furthermore, all goods were unaccompanied by tax documentation.
At authorized ports, attempts to admit goods produced in the ZFM or imported to other parts of the national territory without authorization from the Federal Revenue Service were prevented, which must be done by registering a Declaration for Internment Control (DCI).
In one of the cases, a business company that was trying to internalize the merchandise had declared that it was scrap, when in fact the product contained in the containers were high-density polyethylene blankets, used for application to surfaces.
In another situation, a businessman tried to admit a load of plastic inputs in the name of another without DCI registration.

It should be noted that the law classifies the departure of goods from the Free Zone without legal authorization issued by the competent authorities as a crime of smuggling (art. 39 of DL 288/1967).
This offense is even criminally punishable in the attempted modality and the merchandise originating from this offense is subject to the penalty of confiscation by the customs authority.
If this sanction is applied, with the exception of electronic cigarettes which must be destroyed, all goods must be auctioned and the proceeds will be used to compensate for damages to the treasury.
